About the herb
Not the petal, the cup beneath it.
It is the fleshy cup at the base of the flower that makes the drink, not the petal, and it is cut by hand within days of the bloom falling. Hibiscus is drunk through the heat of summer and taken for the vitamin C it carries.
Sharply tart, almost cranberry, and an extraordinary deep red. Make a jug, chill it, and put it out in August. Exceptional over ice with a little honey.
